Inaugural 'Dribble For The Cure' Date Set for Nov. 2, 2008

Aug. 20, 2008

LOS ANGELES - Ben Howland's UCLA men's basketball team and the Bruin Athletic Department have joined forces with UCLA basketball alumnus John Vallely, the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF) and Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, for the inaugural 'Dribble For The Cure'. The event will take place on the UCLA campus at historic Pauley Pavilion on Sunday, Nov. 2, 8:30 a.m.-Noon.

For many years, Vallely and his family have been on the front line in the battle against cancer. A starting guard on John Wooden's UCLA 1969 and 1970 NCAA Championship teams, Vallely is a cancer-survivor and the Director of Scientific Affairs for the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. In 1991, John and Karen Vallely lost their daughter Erin to cancer at the age of 12.

Nov. 2 will be a meaningful day for the entire family, and a great opportunity to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. Proceeds will be directed to finding a cure for pediatric cancer and supporting the treatment of children with cancer at the Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA.

The event will start and end at Pauley Pavilion, where activities, autographs, food booths and entertainment will be featured. Participants will have the opportunity to meet the UCLA men's basketball squad, along with student-athletes from other Bruin athletic teams. Each participant is asked to bring their own basketball and 'Dribble For The Cure' on a course through the UCLA campus.

Participants will be asked to collect pledges for their 'Dribble' and will become eligible for prizes based on pledge amounts turned in the day of the event. Each participant will also receive an official 'Dribble For The Cure' t-shirt. In addition, participants will receive free entry to two UCLA athletic events later that afternoon - women's/men's soccer doubleheader (noon/2:30p.m.) at Marshall Field (Drake Stadium) and a women's basketball exhibition game (2 p.m.) in Pauley Pavilion.

'This year's `Dribble For The Cure' at UCLA promises to be a memorable event with many opportunities to participate,' said Howland. 'Please join us in our fund-raising effort. We realize that any success we achieve is due to the efforts of many. You can truly make a difference in the lives of children suffering from cancer.'
