August 25, 2008

BERKELEY - Golfer Roseanne Niven won the Ladies British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship last week at Malone Golf Club near Belfast, Ireland, sealing her victory in the first hole of a sudden-death playoff after a final round of 68 to make the junior from Perth, Scotland, the Muscle Milk California Student-Athlete of the Week.

By posting a score of even-par 288 with her final round of four-under-par 68, the lowest of the championship, she became seventh Scot to win the stroke-play tournament, which started in 1969.

Niven shot five-under par for the second 36 holes of the tournament to climb up the leaderboard from a tie for 19th at the start of the final day. She tallied a one-under par 71 in the third round and then signed off with a 68.

In her third round, Niven had five birdies and a double bogey 6 at the 14th. In her final circuit, Niven, who finished runner-up to Breanne Loucks in her last trip to Ireland for the Irish women's open amateur stroke-play, had two halves of 34.
