Huskies Fall To Sounders 1-0 In Exhibition
Aug. 27, 2008
SEATTLE - Sebastien Le Toux scored the game's only goal in the 63rd minute, leading the Seattle Sounders to a 1-0 victory over Washington in an exhibition contest at Husky Soccer Field, Wednesday evening.
The match marked the final exhibition tune-up for the Huskies before they officially open the 2008 season this weekend at the Nike Portland Invitational. UW will face Fairleigh Dickinson Friday (4:30 p.m.) and 10th-ranked Virginia Tech Sunday (12 p.m.).
Le Toux's goal came after just over 60 minutes of scoreless soccer at the 62:10 mark, one of seven second-half shots for the Sounders. The Huskies held the offensive edge in the first-half with seven shots to the Sounders' five, but it was Seattle who ended up on top with a final advantage of 12-9.
The Huskies went with nearly an entirely different lineup in the second-half, allowing all players who suited up to see time on the pitch.
'I'm very, very pleased with both halves,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger commented with regard to his team's play. 'We're 48 hours away from our opener so there was a concern about how much the players that we see starting on Friday should play but it was perfect. We gained a ton of confidence. I'm very sure that will spin off for a confident start for us Friday.'
Senior midfielder Raphael Cox had a team-high three shots for the Huskies, including a rocket the flew just left of the post late in the game. Cox also helped prevent a possible first-half goal for the Sounders, heading a ball out from just in front of the goal line on a shot that was headed for the back of the net.
Former Husky Chris Eylander manned the net for the Seattle Sounders, earning the shutout and grabbing two saves. Sanna Nyassi had a team-high three shots for the pros.
All three Husky goalkeepers saw time in the net, with junior Rylan Hawkins playing the first half and grabbing two saves. Sophomore Stephen Fung and freshman Brooks Hopp shared time in the second-half, each making one save.
The Huskies won't have much time to rest, as they head to Portland as soon as Thursday for their weekend matches. UW plays its first five matches on the road before making its official home debut hosting the Husky Fever Classic, Sept. 19 and 21.
