PORTLAND, Ore. - Freshman Dylan Tucker-Gangnes scored his first collegiate goal just 46 seconds into the match, but it wasn't enough for the Washington men's soccer team as the Huskies fell to Fairleigh Dickinson, 2-1, in the squad's season opener at the Nike Portland Invitational, Friday.

Tucker-Gangnes didn't waste any time getting the Huskies (0-1-0) on the board with his six-yard shot that was assisted by sophomore defender Brad Keller. But UW then surrendered a pair of unanswered goals from Fairleigh Dickinson (1-0-0) in the 37th and 87th minutes of the match.

Washington held a 1-0 lead until the 36:06 mark when FDU's Paul King scored the equalizer on a 12-yard shot past UW sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Fung. The match looked like it might have been headed into extra minutes, but Fabrizio Trezza tallied the gamewinner with just three minutes left in regulation - one of just two second-half shots for the Knights.

Despite the loss, the Huskies ended up with the offensive edge on shots, 16-6. Freshman forward Brent Richards led UW in his collegiate debut with six shots, while Tucker-Gangnes added four. King had a team-high two shots for Fairleigh Dickinson.

The Knights played the entire second-half with just 10 players as reserve Dan Rasoilo was ejected with a red card just before halftime.

Seven newcomers made their debuts for Washington, including Tucker-Gangnes, Richards, freshman defender Tyler Klein and freshman midfielder Casey McCool who earned their first career starts.

'It's a disappointing start for us,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said after the squad's opener. 'We have to point to Sunday now to do better.'

UW will look to get in the win column on Sunday when it faces 10th-ranked Virginia Tech in the final round of the Nike Portland Invitational at 12 p.m. The weekend marks the start of a five-game road swing to open the season.
