Volleyball Kicks Off Season With Sweep of Montana State

BOZEMAN, Mont. - The Washington volleyball team started its season in style at the 14th Annual Holiday Inn Classic on Friday with a three set sweep over host team Montana State, 25-18, 25-17, 25-14.
Sophomore Kindra Carlson posted a team-high 13 kills in the match, while sophomore Becky Perry led the team with a .562 hitting percentage, with nine kills on 16 swings. The Huskies combined for a .388 team hitting percentage with 43 kills. Sophomore Jenna Hagglund put up 38 of the Dawgs' 40 assists.
In the third set, Montana State jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Huskies systematically shut the Bobcats down, holding them to just four kills and -.05 hitting as a team. The `Cats tried to keep the set close, fighting through four score ties, but Washington outscored the Bobcats 19-8 to close out the match.
The second set started with Montana State scoring first. Through the first 18 points, the teams battled through seven ties before the Huskies built their lead with four unanswered points. With Washington up 18-13, the Bobcats called a timeout to regroup. Three of the next four points belonged to Washington, forcing Montana State into a second timeout. The Huskies took five of the next seven points to win the second set.
Washington scored the first point of the match on a kill by Perry. The `Cats kept the score close through the first 15 points of the set, but the Huskies pulled away on six straight points.
The Huskies out-killed the Bobcats 43-25 and recorded 40 assists to Montana State's 25. Both teams notched five blocks and 27 digs apiece.
Washington is back in action Saturday morning at 9am PT as it faces regional rival Portland in its second match of the season to close out the 14th Annual Holiday Inn Classic at Montana State. For the complete schedule and results, log on to GoHuskies.com.
