Cats Leave Home Undefeated
Arizona opened its season last Sunday against Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo. Over 700 fans, friends and family made their way out to Murphey Field at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium for what turned out to be the Wildcats first win of the season, 1-0.
The 1-0 lead was captured in the 35th minute when Tucson native, KARINA CAMACHO launched a goal from 18 yards out. Camacho, whose first goal as a freshman came against Utah, graduated from Cienega High School. On the assist was junior midfielder, SAMANTHA Drees. Drees had a team high with five assists last year.
Securing the victory was junior goalkeeper Chelsea McIntyre. McIntyre was injured in last year's preseason and missed entire 2007 season before returning last Sunday. 'I was a little nervous driving over here, but at the same time I was excited,' she said after the game, 'I was glad to be out there with my teammates.' McIntyre finished the game with five impressive saves.
Friday, August 29 - at Utah, 7:30 p.m. MDT
Monday, September 1 - at BYU, 4 p.m. MDT
Noting the Opponents:
Utah: The University of Utah women's soccer team (1-1) met the Cats in last year's season opener. The Utes defeated Arizona 2-0, with goals being scored by now senior captain Katy Reineke and now sophomore Adele Letro. Reineke finished second on the team in points (25), goals (9) and assists (7) and was in the top five in the Mountain West Conference in all three categories. The Utes coached by Rich Manning, now in his seventh season at Utah, has elevated Ute women's soccer to elite status. Manning has coached the Utes to an NCAA Tournament berth in six of his seven years at the helm. He has also directed Utah to three MWC regular season championships (2003, '05, '06) and a pair of league tournament titles (2003, '04).
BYU: BYU, easily the preseason favorite in the league, captured seven of the eight first place votes. The team returns all but three starters. The Cats will face the Cougars this weekend at 4 p.m. MDT in Provo, Utah. Bingham Young is the reigning Mountain West Conference tournament champion. Last season, Arizona held the Cougars, then ranked No. 16, to just one goal. Coaching BYU is Jennifer Rockwood. Rockwood ranks 11th in winning percentage among active NCAA coaches.
