WSU Volleyball Defeats Seattle University 3-2 in Boise
Aug. 30, 2008
BOISE, Idaho -- The Washington State volleyball team remained undefeated but needed a five-game win over first-year DI program Seattle University to stay unblemished. The Cougars, under the direction of new head coach Andrew Palileo, downed the Redhawks at Bronco Gym Saturday morning with sets scores of 20-25, 25-21, 25-9, 20-25, and 15-12.
Senior transfer Emily Rooney (Red Wing, Minn.) led the Cougs with 17 kills and hit an outstanding .560 for the match. Freshman Breann Nesselhuf (Swink, Colo.) added 11 kills while junior transfer Renee Bordelon (Couer d'Alene, Idaho) had 42 assists. Junior libero Kelly Hyder (Huntington Beach, Calif.) contributed 26 digs and sophomore Brittany Tillman (Tacoma, Wash.) had seven blocks.
WSU hit .278 as a team and dominated play at the net, out-blocking Seattle U 12 to 5 as the Redhawks hit .127.
'We didn't start off the way we wanted to. Seattle did a good job of dictating the pace against us and we panicked a little bit and came out a little sluggish,' Palileo said. 'In the second and third sets, we took control. I made some adjustments. Renee came in (at setter) and did a great job of running the offense. Breann Nesselhuf came in on the outside position and gave us some key kills. Emily Rooney was the steadiest player that we had today, did a great job of transitioning and attacked on the back slide quite a bit.
'I'm happy with the outcome. We're building character and we are going to continue to get better. Renee, Emily and Nessy did a great job of stepping into their new positions that we haven't worked on a lot.'
The Cougars play tournament host Boise State Saturday evening.
