SPOKANE, Wash. - Junior Veronica Perez scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute, her second goal in as many games, giving Washington a 2-1 victory over Gonzaga in women's soccer action Sunday at Gonzaga Soccer Field.

Perez, who scored the third of Washington's goals in a 3-0 season-opening win over Montana Thursday, took a pass from junior Alex Kirk with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation and knocked in the game-winner from 15 yards out to improve Washington's record to 2-0-0 this season. Gonzaga fell to 2-2-0.

The Huskies trailed at halftime, 1-0, despite outplaying the Bulldogs for much of the first 45 minutes. UW outshot Gonzaga, 5-1, and had five corner kick opportunities in the first half but the Zags capitalized on their lone shot. In the 39th minute, Katie Spangenberg netted her first goal of the season on a shot from 25 yards out to give Gonzaga the lead going into the break.

Washington continued to put the pressure on the Bulldogs early in the second half. After five more unsuccessful shots, senior Melissa Beal finally gave the Huskies the equalizer in the 66th minute. Beal's first goal of the season and the 12th of her career came off an assist from sophomore Hannah Greig.

Just 15 minutes later, the Huskies took the lead when Perez scored the fourth goal of her career off a feed from Kirk. It marked Kirk's third assist in two games this season. With two goals on the young season, Perez has already equaled her career total coming into this season.

Gonzaga, which took just three shots in the game, had one last chance in the 89th minute but Ashley Riley's shot was blocked by the Husky defense.

The Huskies finished with a 15-3 shot advantage and also dominated Gonzaga in the corner kick battle, 9-0.

'That first goal was just a weird, fluky goal,' Husky head coach Lesle Gallimore said. 'We were playing really great soccer but we talked to them at halftime about not over-passing and not over-thinking in front of the goal and that was the difference.

'In the second half, we attacked much better in the penalty area and both goals came from great combinations of hard work and teamwork. Veronica's goal was just a great finish. It was a world-class goal.'

With 18 underclassmen on the squad, Gallimore was pleased with the Huskies poise and their ability to come away with two wins on the road in the opening weekend.

'It was good for us to be up against the wall against a good team on their field and be able to battle back,' Gallimore said. 'Anytime you can get two wins on the road, it's a huge plus.'

The Huskies return to action next week with the 14th annual Husky Nike Invitational at Husky Soccer Field, their first home action of the season. Washington will face Colgate, Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. and Kennesaw State, Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1:30 p.m.
