Third-Ranked Women's Soccer Blanks No. 6 Portland, 1-0

Aug. 30, 2008

PORTLAND, Ore. - The University of Portland's 17-match home unbeaten streak came to an end Saturday night as the third-ranked UCLA Bruins held on for a 1-0 win before 4,351 fans at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. Olympian Lauren Cheney notched the lone goal of the match in the 37th minute to give the Bruins the victory.

Cheney broke free on a pass over the top of the defense by senior Christina DiMartino and one-touched the ball around Pilot goalkeeper Kelsey Davis. She settled the ball and netted her first goal of the season just past Portland's retreating defenders.

The game was balanced as both teams finished with nine shots and a few quality scoring chances per side.

Portland's best chances came early as junior Michelle Enyeart broke free for a long run down the left sideline in the fourth minute. She crossed a beautiful ball to the foot of freshman Danielle Foxhoven who got tangled up with a defender on her hip and could not get off a point blank shot. Two minutes later Foxhoven drove a cross from senior Megan Rapinoe just wide of the left post.

UCLA's McCall Zerboni blasted a shot that appeared headed for the Pilot goal in the 11th minute, but Davis made a lunging stop to her right.

After the late first half goal, UCLA and Cheney carried some momentum into the second period as the Soccer Buzz Preseason Player of the Year had three consecutive shots from dangerous positions just miss.

The Pilots (1-1) applied the pressure late looking for the equalizer and had two opportunities with corner kicks in the final five minutes, but the Bruins tightened up the defense and held on for the shutout.

Portland gained a 5-2 edge in corner kicks on the night. Both Davis and UCLA keeper Ashley Thompson made two saves between the pipes.

The Pilots will make a quick turnaround and face another tough home task as the defending national champion and current No. 1 USC Trojans visit on Monday at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are still available by visiting or any Ticketmaster outlet.

NOTES: Former UP All-American Shannon MacMillan made her return to Merlo Field as an assistant on the Bruins' bench ...
