SEATTLE - Husky volleyball opens its home slate this Thursday and Friday in the Northwest Challenge, featuring Gonzaga, Portland State and Boise State.


Huskies Host First of Two Home Tournaments
The ninth-ranked Washington volleyball team plays host to its first of two home tournaments Thursday and Friday, Sept. 4-5 at the Bank of America Arena. The Huskies face in-state rival Gonzaga Thursday at 7pm before playing a day-night double-header on Friday, facing Boise State at 11am and Portland State in the nightcap at 7pm.

Scouting the Bulldogs
The Gonzaga Bulldogs are 1-3 so far on the young season, having most recently been swept by UC Riverside in the University of Montana Tournament. The Zags also lost to North Dakota State and Montana. Gonzaga's only victory of the season so far was a three-set sweep over Bradley University on Aug. 29. In 2007, the Zags finished the season with a 17-13 record.

About the Series
The Huskies and Bulldogs have met 13 times since 1983, with Washington holding the series edge, 11-2. The teams last met in 2007, with the Huskies winning, 3-0. In fact, Washington has won the last six straight meetings.

Scouting the Broncos
Boise State is 0-3 so far in 2008, with losses to Seattle University, Cal State Northridge and Washington State. As a team, the Broncos are hitting .117, averaging 11.09 kills per set. Boise State is out-blocking its opponents, averaging 2.91 blocks per set.

About the Series
Washington and Boise State have met only nine times since 1983, with the Broncos holding the all-time series edge, 5-4. The Huskies have won the last four straight, though, including last year's match-up, which was a three set sweep.

Scouting the Vikings
Portland State is 2-1 in 2008, winning matches over Wyoming and the College of Charleston in its opening weekend of play. The Vikings' only loss so far came at the hands of Oregon State. Last season, the Viks closed with a 21-8 overall record.

About the Series
The series between Washington and Portland State dates back to 1976 and the two teams have met 29 times. The Huskies hold the series edge, 15-13-1, and the tied match holds the distinction of being one of just two ties in Washington's history (the other was against Simon Fraser). The teams last met in 2006, when the Huskies defeated the Vikings, 3-0.

Last Time Out
Washington won the 14th Annual Holiday Inn Classic hosted by Montana State, defeating MSU 3-0 on Friday, Aug. 29 and downing Portland 3-0 on Saturday, Aug. 30. Three Huskies were named to the All-Tournament team; outside hitters Becky Perry and Airial Salvo and libero Tamari Miyashiro.

They're Honored
Junior outside hitter Airial Salvo, sophomore outside hitter Becky Perry and junior libero Tamari Miyashiro were each named to the 14th Annual Holiday Inn Classic All-Tournament team. Salvo, who made her Husky debut against Montana State on Aug. 29, tallied an outstanding nine service aces over the two matches, seven of which were against Portland on Aug. 30. She also managed 14 kills with a .378 attack percentage. For her efforts, Salvo was named Tournament MVP.

Perry led the team in hitting percentage over the weekend, notching a .440 average with 12 kills on 25 swings with three block assists. Against host Montana State, Perry posted a match-high .562 hitting percentage with nine kills.

Miyashiro managed a team-high eight digs against Montana State with two assists and one service ace. Against Portland, she racked up another eight digs and two assists.
