Cougar Swimmers Complete Snake River Challenge
Sept. 3, 2008
PULLMAN, Wash - The Washington State women's swim team competed Labor Day in the Snake River Challenge. The annual event consists of a 2.2 mile swim on the Snake River from Granite Point to Wawawai Landing, followed by a 2.2 mile run back to Granite Point.
A strong headwind made for choppy conditions Monday making the already grueling event that much more challenging for the swim team.
'The results of the swim times reflected the conditions as the average swim time took seven minutes longer than last year,' head coach Erica Quam said.
Sophomore Sierra Burton (Carmel, Calif.) had the best overall time making her way back to Granite Point in 71 minutes, 8 seconds. Jennifer Dean (sophomore, Campbell, Calif.) came up a close second with a time of 71:33 while Kristin Marceau (senior, Bend, Ore.) rounded up the top three with an overall time of 73:01.
Burton also had the fastest swim time for the second year in a row finishing in a time of 52:17, seven minutes and 52 seconds slower than last year. Dean also placed second in the swimming portion of the event with a time of 54:39 and Rachael Krager (freshman, Valencia, Calif.) finished third with a time of 54:50.
Dean had the fastest run time of the day covering the 2.2 mile distance in a time of 16:54. Marceau had the second fastest time finishing in 17 minutes, 17 seconds. Melissa Bogert (freshman, Juneau, Alaska) took third place with a time of 17:21.
'I believe this event is one of the first challenges that draws our team closer together. I hope to see this kind of camaraderie continue to grow as our season gets underway,' Quam said. 'I would like to thank everyone for their support of this event including the Whitman County Sherriff's office, WSU Athletic Medicine Staff, WSU Rowing staff, Melissa Fadler the aquatics director for sending down three WSU lifeguards, as well as all of the fans, friends, and family that came down to cheer the team on.'
The next event slated for the Cougars will be the alumnae races Saturday, Sept. 27 at Gibb Pool.
