Volleyball Heads North To Face-Off In The University of Portland Challenge

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State Sun Devil Women's Volleyball Team (2-1 overall, 0-0 Pac-10) will hit the road for the first time under Head Coach Jason Watson as they head to Portland, Ore. to compete in the University of Portland Challenge. There they will face Portland (1-2), Kansas State (2-1), USF (3-0) and UC Irvine (2-1).

ASU's tournament schedule is as follows:

Thursday, Sept. 4

ASU vs. Portland - 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 5

ASU vs. Kansas State - 12:00 p.m.

ASU vs. USF - 5:00 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 6

ASU vs. UC Irvine - 9:30 a.m.

Recapping Last Weekend:

Against South Carolina:



ASU came out full-throttle in their first match of the season as they took it to the South Carolina Gamecocks, sweeping the match for their first win of the season with Sarah Reaves leading the offense with 16 kills coupled with Marina Mercer's 34 assists. The Sun Devils dominated the scoreboard the entire match as they relinquished the lead only once in all three matches en route to a 25-20, 25-17 and 25-21 sweep.

Against UNLV:



While the Sun Devils shone in the earlier match in the day, the 2007 Mountain West Conference Champion UNLV Rebels stepped to the court where they stormed out to take a 25-19 win in the first set, posting a .355 attack percentage. ASU rallied back in the second set with a .342 attack pct. to win 25-20. A tough third set put ASU down 2-1 before they rallied hard in the fourth but were barely edged by UNLV 25-23.

Against Dayton:


The Sun Devils came out blasting in the second day of the Sheraton Classic where they toppled Dayton 25-18 and 25-19 while posting a .286 and .387 team attack percentage before Dayton attempted to fight back in the third set, but were unable to best ASU who locked in the tournament crown with a 28-26 win. Sarah Reaves posted a team match-high .357 attack percentage on the season with her 17 kills in three sets.

For their efforts Margie Giordano and Sarah Reaves were named to the all-tournament team.
