ASU Women's Soccer Hosts TCU and Weber State This Weekend
Sept. 4, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's soccer team opens up the home portion of its 2008 schedule on Friday when it hosts Texas Christian University at 7 p.m. at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in Tempe. It will be the first of two home games they will play this weekend.
The Sun Devils (1-1-1) opened up the 2008 campaign by playing their first three contests on the road. They defeated Northern Arizona 4-2 (Aug. 22) in their season opener and last week tied Pepperdine (1-1) and fell to San Diego State (2-1).
Offensively ASU has been led in its first three games by sophomore forward Karin Volpe, who is pacing the team in both goals (3) and points (6). Volpe needs two more goals to tie her season total of five from last season, which led the team. Also finding the back of the net for the Sun Devils this season have been junior midfielder Carly Kallas (1) and sophomore midfielders Alexandra Elston (1) and Jill Shoquist (1). Kallas' 10 shots currently lead ASU.
In contrast to the Sun Devils, TCU (2-0-1) opened up its season playing its first three games of the season at home. The Horned Frogs started the season with a 5-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin. They followed that with a 3-0 triumph over Xavier before tying Ole Miss (2-2) in their most recent match.
The Sun Devils wrap up their first homestand of the season on Sunday when they face Weber State at 1 p.m.
Like ASU, Weber State has also started its season with a 1-1-1 record. In their first game the Wildcats had a 2-1 setback against Seattle University before bouncing back with a 3-0 victory over North Dakota. In its most recent game, Weber State played Boise State to a 2-2 tie. Prior to their game against ASU on Friday, Weber State will play at Arizona on Friday night.
This will be only the third meeting between ASU and Weber State. The all-time series is tied 1-1. Weber State defeated ASU 5-1 in the Sun Devils' inaugural season (1996). More recently though ASU won 5-2 victory in Tempe in 2005.
Ticket prices for ASU home soccer games are $7 for adults, $5 for youth/senior and for groups of 15 or more it is $3 per person.
