Sept. 5, 2008

LOS ANGELES - Freshman Alex Jupiter (Hermosa Beach/Redondo Union HS) had a match-high 14 kills, posting a .419 evening (14-1-31) as the No. 7 USC Women of Troy swept the Hofstra Pride, 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-17), in day two action at the 2008 Holiday Inn LA City Center Trojan Invitational. Jupiter added two service aces, one assists, one dig and two blocks in the match. She recorded double digits in kills for her fourth straight match and has a 4.43 kills-per-set average so far while hitting .303 on the season.

USC (2-2) also had double-digit kills from junior Jessica Gysin (Los Gatos/St. Francis HS) and sophomore Kimmee Roleder (Pasadena/Pasadena HS), who had 10 kills each. Sophomore middle blocker Zoe Garrett (Laguna Beach/Laguna Beach HS) had seven kills, hitting .357 (7-2-14) with three blocks. Junior All-America setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) had 31 assists and seven digs for the Women of Troy.

Harmonie Calinda led Hofstra (2-3) with nine kills and seven digs while Lauren Engle had eight kills. Chrissey Cruz recorded 26 assists and six digs for the Pride.

The Trojans hit .346 for the match, hitting .400 (20-4-4) in set two and .419 (16-3-31) in set three.

Roleder had two kills early for the Trojans, adding a service ace as the Women of Troy took an early 6-3 lead in the first set. Jupiter put one down and also added an ace as USC built its margin to an 11-5 score. After USC led 16-9, the Pride responded with four straight points as Calinda posted back-to-back kills. Roleder stopped the bleeding and Jupiter added three more kills to her total as the Trojans kept its lead at five, 21-16. Garrett and Roleder teamed up for a block and Garrett added a kill as USC closed out the set one victory.

After four kills by Jupiter put it at 5-5 in the second set, both teams traded points all the way to a 17-17 score. Williams and Carico broke the streak with kills, but Hofstra came back as Ashley Legerretta to tie it again at 19-19. Garrett recorded a kill and teamed up with Carico on a block to keep the lead for good. A service error by USC made it a 23-22 score, but a Gysin/Garrett stuff and set-clinching kill by Gysin put the Women of Troy up two games to none.

Back-to-back aces from Roleder helped USC get out to a 7-4 lead in the third set. Monica Knight knocked down a kill for Hofstra and helped Taylor Moore on a block to tie the game at 11-11. USC then pulled away as Jupiter's three kills were part of an 8-2 run with the 19-13 lead. Hofstra got to within three, but the Trojans tallied the last five points to earn the sweep.

The Holiday Inn LA City Center Trojan Invitational concludes tomorrow with Oklahoma and Hofstra at 4 p.m. with USC and San Diego playing at 6:30 p.m. The USC-San Diego match will be broadcast live on, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
