Ellis Leads USC In Season Opener at UCI

The USC women's cross country team opened the 2008 season at the UC Irvine Invitational in Irvine, Calif. today (Sept. 6) and were led by junior Katherine Ellis who finished the 5K course in 19:01.80 to place 39th. USC, which held out it top four runners, finished 10th in the team competition.
Ellis led USC's 12 runners and set a new PR by 0.2 seconds, bettering her previous 5K best of 19:02 set at last season's Cal State Fullerton Invitational.
The Trojans final two scoring runners were freshmen Leah Gaeta and Jessica Lundin. Gaeta had a strong second half of the race to finish 61st with a time of 19:48.10 in her first collegiate meet. Lundin was less than a second behind with a time of 19:48.90 to place 63rd as USC's fifth scoring runner.
Sophomore Brianna Bentley was the Trojans' sixth runner placing 69th with a time of 20:05.90. Junior transfer Jasmine Leija running in her first cross country meet for USC was the Trojans' final runner that figured in the scoring as she placed 74th with a time of 20:15.70.
Also running for USC today were senior transfer Liz Gill who had a time of 20:23.40, junior Jennifer Wells (20:51.60), sophomore Devon Rennie (22:27.20), freshman Joy Samuels (22:29.40) and sophomore Colby Kennedy (25:25.10). Senior Allison Spies ran unattached today and had a time of 21:13.90.
