No. 5 Golden Bears Take 3-0 Win Over DePaul
Sept. 6, 2008
BERKELEY - The No. 5-ranked California volleyball team (4-0, 0-0 Pac-10) defeated DePaul (0-4, 0-0 Big East) in a three-set sweep (25-21, 26-24, 25-19) today at the 2008 Golden Bear Invitational at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. The Golden Bears put on a hitting clinic, posting a .433 attack percentage while notching a season-high 49 kills (10e, 90att). Leading the way for Cal was junior outside hitter Hana Cutura who had 18 kills on 27 attacks without an error (.667). Cutura also had five digs and added three blocks.
The Bears had trouble pulling away from a DePaul team that fought hard in all three sets. But once again, it was the steadying force of senior outside hitter Am'ra Solomon that helped Cal seal the deal. Just as in the previous match, Solomon put down the Bears' final two points to clinch the match; the last on an assist from sophomore setter Carli Lloyd, who finished with 42 in the match.
In the second set, the Bears found themselves down five points (20-15) to the Blue Demons before a couple of kills from freshman outside hitter Tarah Murrey put Cal within a point at 21-20. The Bears reached 25 first, but needed one last point to get the set and did so when Sarah Cullen committed an attack error for DePaul.
Also in action today, UC Riverside defeated James Madison in four sets (19-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20) to go 2-0 at the Golden Bear Invitational. The Highlanders were led by Kelly Fink who had 16 kills (6e, 39att, .256) and setter Brittney Murrey who had 41 assists and added three kills. UCR goes to 5-2 on the year heading into tonight's match-up against Cal and James Madison falls to 2-4 overall.
The Bears conclude the Golden Bear Invitational with a match against UC Riverside tonight at 7 p.m. Prior to first serve, DePaul will take on James Madison at 4:30 p.m. Both matches will be played at Haas Pavilion and live stats will be available via Gametracker.
