Wildcats get by Texas Tech
Sept. 6, 2008
Tucson, Ariz. -
The Arizona volleyball team bounced back from a tough loss and wrapped up the Arizona Invitational with a 3-0 victory over Texas Tech Saturday, Sept. 6 at McKale Center. The Wildcats finished with a 2-1 record over the two-day invitational to claim second place. Santa Clara won the tournament after posting an undefeated 3-0 record, completed with their three-set victory over Texas State earlier in the day.
The Wildcats finished with a .353 hitting percentage on their way to a 25-17, 25-21, 25-17 victory over the Red Raiders, a day removed from being handed their first loss of the season in a tough four-set match against Santa Clara.
Brooke Buringrud, coming off the bench, led Arizona with 11 kills on 14 attempts.
“A lot of us are learning new roles,” Buringrud said after the match. “If (coming off the bench) is my role then that’s my role and I’m ready for that.”
Junior middle blocker Jacy Norton had another impressive performance as she recorded seven kills on eight attempts to finish with a .875 hitting percentage while fellow middle blocker, sophomore Stephanie Snow, also played consistently with eight kills on 12 attempts. Sophomore setter Paige Weber led the way with 33 assists and redshirt sophomore outside hitter Whitney Dosty posted nine kills.
“We know we have a long ways to go, but in seven days we have improved quite a bit,” said UA head coach Dave Rubio after the game.
The team finished with 47 kills, just short of their season high, on 88 attempts. The team also had only 16 attack errors in the match, far down from the 31 it had against Santa Clara last night.
“I think we have a chance of being a really good team.” Rubio said. “We have the right kids and the right talent and now it’s just a matter of molding them into a championship team.”
The win pushed the Wildcats to 5-1 on the season as it heads to California State-Bakersfield University, Rubio’s head coaching alma mater, to play Chicago State Friday at the Cal State-Bakersfield Invitational in Bakersfield, Calif.
