Women take second at NAU
Sept. 6, 2008
FLAGSTAFF- The UA men's and women's cross country team kicked off the 2008 season Saturday at the NAU George Kyte Classic held at Buffalo Park in Flagstaff, Ariz.
The women's team took a strong second place finish and were led by freshman Hannah Moen's second place finish of 18:33.70 over the 5000-meter race in her return to her home town.
Senior Marisaa Urban took sixth place (19:02.80) with another freshman, Hannah Henson, right behind her in seventh (19:05.30). The other point scoring individuals for the ladies team were Christina Rodgers (10th) and Kassidy Rede (22nd).
The UA women also competed without their top returning athlete, senior Irine Lagat.
Moen, who was a six-time Arizona state champion at Coconino High School in Flagstaff, averaged a time of 5:58.50 per mile. Moen finished just behind the overall winner, NAU's Nell Rojas, who finished in a time of 18:26.50.
The sucess of the freshmen in today's race gives the UA women's team a lot to smile about after just their first meet of the season, just days after UA Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Fred Harvey said that this team was 'a thousand times better than last year.'
The men's side put together a respectable performance for a team that's trying to make it's comeback to elite status. The men finished third overall and were led by sophomore Reed Blochberger, who finished the 8000-meter run in a time of 20:18.70 in sixth place.
Fellow sophomore Tanner Carothers came next in ninth place as he clocked a time of 27:27.20. Jordan Mara (12th), Brian MacArthur (17th) and Carlos Rybeck (18th) rounded out the top five scoring individuals for the UA.
The UA will have the next weekend off before participating in their lone home meet of the season at the Dave Murray Invitational of Sept. 19.
