ASU Soccer to Face Baylor and No. 7 Texas on the Road
Sept. 11, 2008
For the third time in four weeks the Arizona State women's soccer team will find itself on the road when it travels to the Lone Star State for a pair of games. The Sun Devils (2-2-1) will begin the weekend in Waco, Texas, where they will face the Baylor Bears on Friday night (7 p.m. CT/5 p.m. PT). ASU will then wrap up its weekend in Austin, Texas, where it will face the No. 7 Texas Longhorns on Sunday (1 p.m. CT/11 a.m. PT).
The Sun Devils are coming off a split of their first two home games. ASU was edged by TCU 1-0 before bouncing back to defeat Weber State 4-0. Freshman forward Sierra Cook led ASU's offensive surge against the Wildcats, scoring her first two goals of the season and adding one assist. Cook's five points against the Wildcats tied the single-game high for all Pac-10 players in 2008. Also adding goals against Weber State were sophomore Karin Volpe and redshirt freshman Erica Long. For Volpe it represented her team leading fourth goal of the season. Junior goalkeeper Briana Silvestri made two saves in the win.
Baylor welcomes in ASU as the Bears continue part of a six-game home stand. Baylor has won its last two games - vs. Presbyterian 3-0 and vs. Prairie View A&M (10-1) - since dropping its first two contests of the season at UTEP (1-0) and at New Mexico (2-0). This will be the third meeting between Baylor and Arizona State. ASU has won the prior two meetings between the two schools, winning 3-0 in Waco in 2001 and 1-0 in Tempe in 2002.
Texas has won all five of its contests this season, outscoring its opponents by a combined 13-2. In their most recent outing the Longhorns escaped with a 2-1double overtime win over Arizona, which extended the Longhorns school record home winning streak to 19 games.
The Longhorns were originally scheduled to face the University of Houston before their game with ASU, however that game was cancelled due to Houston's inability to make the trip to Austin because of the threat of Hurricane Ike.The only prior meetings between Texas and ASU came last season when the Longhorns defeated the Sun Devils 1-0 in Tempe.
After this weekend the Sun Devils will play their next seven games at home beginning with next weekend's contests against CSU Northridge (Sept. 19) and Michigan (Sept. 21).
