Husky lineup set for first tournament

Sept. 11, 2008

SEATTLE -- Husky junior Nick Taylor took top honors at the second annual Fall Scrimmage at at the Tumble Creek Golf Course at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum on Tuesday.

Head coach Matt Thurmond said that the scrimmage fulfilled his two goals: building team chemistry and deciding which golfers to take to the team's first tournament, the Gopher Invitational, which starts Friday. Teeing off for the Huskies this week will be Taylor, Richard Lee, Tze Huang Choo, Kevin Spooner and Darren Wallace.

'I'm excited that the veterens on the team played well,' Thurmond said. 'The course conditions were tough, but the younger guys played well and I can't wait to see how we do in Minnisota.'

The Fall Scrimmage is a 64-hole event, which takes nearly 14 hours to play. Thurmond said he uses this tournament to build mental toughness and get the team together before the first scheduled tournament of the season.

The Huskies are looking to build off of their seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championship in 2007. They will play at the Gofer Invitational later this week and host the Husky Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Course on Sept. 29 and 30.
