No. 6 USC Whites Out Ohio State With 3-0 Sweep
Sept. 12, 2008
LOS ANGELES -- Junior outside hitter Jessica Gysin (Los Gatos/St. Francis HS) recorded a team-high 12 kills Friday as the No. 6 USC Women of Troy swept the Ohio State Buckeyes, 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 27-25), in front of a crowd of 4,062 at the Galen Center. USC tied a school record with its 30th consecutive home win, tying the previous mark of 30 (Sept. 6, 2000-Dec. 6, 2001). The Women of Troy are now 30-1 overall at the Galen Center.
The Trojans (4-2) hit a season-high .389 for the match (41-6-90), holding the Buckeyes (6-3) to a .114 hitting clip for the match.
Junior All-America Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa) posted a sizzling .636 with seven kills and no errors (7-0-11) with 31 assists, six digs and one solo block. Sophomore Kimmee Roleder (Pasadena/Pasadena HS) also had a perfect night hitting-wise with nine kills for a .474 percentage (9-0-19). Roleder had two service aces and four digs. Sophomore middle blocker Zoe Garrett (Laguna Beach/Laguna Beach HS) hit .455 (5-0-11) while freshman Alex Jupiter (Hermosa Beach/Redondo Union HS) had seven kills, hitting .312 (7-2-16).
Anna Szerszen led both teams with 13 kills for the Buckeyes. She added eight digs and one block assist. Kristen Dozier added eight kills for Ohio State.
Down 5-4 in the first set, USC pulled away for good with four straight points for the 8-5 lead. OSU cut the deficit to three at 15-12, but Carico poked a kill towards the end line as USC used a 6-1 run to take the 1-0 lead in the match.
The Women of Troy hit .667 in set two (13-1-18), jumping out to an early 6-2 lead. A series of runs pushed the USC edge to a commanding 15-6 lead as the Trojans forced the Buckeyes to hit a negative .130 in the set.
It was a closer set in the third as both teams traded points through the middle of the set. At 18-18, Roleder used a kill and an ace for three straight points for USC. Dozier put back-to-back kills together for a 21-20 USC advantage. Kaila Calhoun and Szerszen combined on a block later as the set was tied at 23-23. Four alternating points sent the set into overtime, but a ball-handling error against OSU and Jupiter's spiking of an overpass capped the sweep for the host Trojans.
USC travels to the West Point Challenge next week (Sept. 18-19). The Women of Troy will face Hartford on Thursday (Sept. 18) before playing Dartmouth on Friday (Sept. 19) and host Army, also on Friday. The match with Army will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
