Sept. 14, 2008

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Pat Metham and Francois VanderMerwe capped off their first fall tournament by taking the Aggie Invitational doubles title today in Las Cruces, N.M.

The Arizona duo beat New Mexico State’s Eduardo Salas and Roman Stoisavljevic, 8-6, a day after topping the tournament’s top ranked team.

“I’m proud of both their efforts today,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “They played solid over the entire tournament and deserved to win.”

The victory was sweet for VanderMerwe who was playing in his first competitive match since red-shirting the 2007-08 season.

“I thought it was good for Francois to be able to play a lot of matches this weekend,” added Berkowitz.

VanderMerwe also won his singles match against Brian Joiner of Abeline Christian, 6-1, 6-4.

Arizona’s last fall doubles title came last season when Claudio Christen and Bruno Alcala were victorious at the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas.
