No. 1 UCLA Plays to Scoreless Draw with Brown
Sept. 14, 2008
Storrs, Conn. - Despite thoroughly dominating its opponent on the stat sheet, the top-ranked UCLA women's soccer team failed to find the back of the net for the first time this season, playing to a scoreless draw with Brown on Sunday afternoon at the UConn Classic.
UCLA (5-0-1), which had outscored its opponents 16-1 heading into Sunday's match, outshot Brown, 34-7 on the afternoon. Junior forward Kara Lang led the Bruins with 10 shots, even bouncing one off the post in the 80th minute. Freshman Sydney Leroux and senior McCall Zerboni each finished with six shots. UCLA also owned an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman Yiana Dimmitt made her first career start for UCLA in goal, making one save in the first 45 minutes of action. She was relieved at the start of the second half by senior Ashley Thompson, who made two saves in the next 65 minutes.
Sunday marked the first time that the Bruins had failed to score in 25 matches. In fact, it was a year ago to the day of the Bruins' last scoreless match (0-0 draw vs. San Diego on Sept. 14, 2007). Despite the tie, the Bruins did manage to register their fifth straight shutout of the year.
For its part, Brown enjoyed a tremendous weekend, as the Bears also beat No. 11 Penn State on Friday night.
