Stanford Men's Tennis Releases 2008-09 Schedule

Sept. 17, 2008

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford men's tennis team released its schedule today for the 2008-09 season. The Cardinal will participate in four fall tournaments beginning in October and a dual match in November before beginning the spring season in January on its quest to capture the program's 18th NCAA championship.

The team will start things off on October 6 in Tulsa, Okla. at the week-long D'Novo ITA All-American Championship. Afterwards, Stanford will return home and remain in the Bay Area for the Wilson ITA Regional Championship from Oct. 17-21 in Berkeley, Calif. On October 31, the Cardinal will travel to Moraga, Calif. to participate in the three-day Saint Mary's Gael Classic.

In November, the squad will close out its fall tournament schedule with a trip across the country to Charlottesville, Va. for the ITA National Indoor Championship from Nov. 6-9. Stanford will end fall competition with its annual trip to Hawaii for a dual match against Hawai'i on Nov. 25 in Maui.

The Cardinal will come back from the holiday break and make a return trip to Thousand Oaks, Calif. for the four-day Sherwood Cup, a tournament the team competed in last year.

Dual matches will commence on Jan. 23, four days after the completion of the Sherwood Cup. Stanford has slated two home duels, one against Saint Mary's on Jan. 23 and the other against Sacramento State on Jan. 27, to open head-to-head competition.

Following the home-stand, the Cardinal will attempt to qualify for the National Team Indoor Championship in Boise, Idaho, taking on Boise State on Jan. 31. Should Stanford defeat the Broncos, it will play the winner of Vanderbilt and Auburn on Feb. 1. If the Cardinal qualifies, it would have to fly to Chicago for the National Team Indoor Championship beginning on Feb. 13.

The Cardinal will try to avenge last year's NCAA Second Round loss to Pepperdine on Feb. 20 at home, taking on the Waves in the team's final February home match. On Feb. 21, Stanford will travel back to Berkeley to face California in a non-conference match-up.

Stanford will then take two road trips down south, taking on USC and UCLA in Los Angeles from Feb. 27-28, and participating in the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament in La Jolla, Calif. from March 6-8.

On March 24, the Cardinal will renew its rivalry with Baylor in the HP Cup, held this year in Waco, Texas, before beginning the Pac-10 season.

Pac-10 play for Stanford will begin with a set of home competitions against UCLA (March 27) and USC (March 28). The Cardinal will remain home on March 31 to play Cal Poly in a midweek match.

Stanford resumes Pac-10 matches in Arizona, facing the Wildcats in Tempe. Arizona State was forced to discontinue its men's tennis program after last season, so the Cardinal will compete in only one match that weekend.

Fresno State will come to The Farm for a Tuesday tangle with Stanford on April 7. Following the match, the Cardinal will head to the Northwest for matches against Oregon (April 10) and Washington (April 11).

Head Coach John Whitlinger's crew will then host San Francisco for the team's final non-conference match of the season on April 15, before wrapping the regular season and conference play up on April 18 against California at the Taube Family Tennis Center.

This year's Pac-10 Championships will run from April 23-26 and will be held as always in Ojai, Calif. The first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament are set for May 8-9, and the NCAA Championships will take place on the campus of Texas A&M in College Station, Texas from May 14-25.
