No. 5 USC Records 3-0 Sweep Against Hartford
Sept. 18, 2008
WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Sophomore Geena Urango (Los Alamitos/Los Alamitos HS) had a match-high nine kills Thursday while sophomore middle blocker Zoe Garrett (Laguna Beach/Laguna Beach HS) tied a personal best with nine blocks as the No. 5 USC Women of Troy swept the Hartford Hawks, 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-18). It was the first of three matches for USC at the West Point Challenge.
Urango hit .375 (9-3-16) for USC (5-2), who won its fifth straight match. She had two aces and two digs. Garrett had a career-high three service aces to go along with her one solo block and eight block assists, tying her nine blocks against Washington State (Oct. 18, 2007).
USC's 16 blocks in the match were the most since another 16-block performance last year on Oct. 12 against Oregon.
Freshman outside hitter Alex Jupiter (Hermosa Beach/Redondo Union HS) had eight kills in a .312 match and four blocks while sophomore Kimmee Roleder (Pasadena/Pasadena HS) added seven kills and three blocks.
In the first set, the Trojans broke away from an 9-6 lead with 10 straight points on Alli Hillgren's serve. USC used five blocks during that streak to cruise to the set victory.
With the score tied at 6-6 in the second, Hillgren's serve was the catalyst again for a 9-3 run. The Women of Troy forced Hartford to hit in the minus column in the first two sets as the Hawks hit an overall negative .053 for the match.
After a 15-7 start to the third set, Hartford pulled to within three before Jupiter's kill helped USC finish with an 8-4 run for the sweep.
USC continues play in the West Point Challenge tomorrow with an 11 a.m. match (Eastern) against Dartmouth and a 5 p.m. match against host Army. The match against Army will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
