ASU Women's Soccer Kicks Off Homestand Against CSU Northridge on Friday Night
Sept. 19, 2008
Currently riding a three-match unbeaten streak, the Arizona State women's soccer team begins a seven-game homestand on Friday night (7 p.m.) when it hosts the Cal State Northridge Matadors at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The Sun Devils will then close out the weekend on Sunday when they host the Michigan Wolverines at 1 p.m.
Last weekend's trip to the state of Texas concluded three-week span for the Sun Devils in which they had to play five of their first seven games on the road. ASU opened its season with a 4-2 win over Northern Arizona before a three-match winless streak in which it went 0-2-1 at Pepperdine (T, 1-1), at San Diego State (L, 2-1) and vs. TCU (L, 1-0).
The Sun Devils' current three-match unbeaten streak began with a 4-0 win vs. Weber State (Sept. 7). ASU would follow that up with a 1-0 win at Baylor (Sept. 12) and a 0-0 tie at No. 7 Texas last Sunday.
The common theme in ASU's recent success has been defense. The Sun Devils have not given up a goal since the first half of their game against TCU. Junior goalkeeper Briana Silvestri has recorded 12 saves since returning to the lineup after missing the first three games because of injury. Silvestri, who this past week was named player of the week by both the Pac-10 and NSCAA, has not allowed a goal in her last 360 minutes on the field. She is currently ranked seventh in the nation with a .237 goals against average. Last season she set the school single-season record with a GAA of only 0.85.
The Matadors have won five of their first six contests of the season. They bring a balanced attack into Friday's game. Eight Matador players have scored at least one goal this season.
This will be only the second time that ASU and CSU Northridge have met. The only other time came in 1996, however it was a big moment in ASU's history as it was the program's first ever win, a 3-0 decision in a contest played at Loyola Marymount.
Ticket prices for ASU home soccer games are $7 for adults, $5 for youth/senior and for groups of 15 or more it is $3 per person. They can be purchased in person at the gate or in advance by calling 480-727-0000.
