Margie Giordano Joins Volleyball Elite With Win Over Albany
Sept. 19, 2008
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Margie Giordano found herself among the elite of NCAA Volleyball as she collected 12 digs to push her career totals to over 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. Giordano found herself as one of only eight in ASU history to ever achieve such a career feat as her 20 digs led the Sun Devils to a 3-2 win over Albany in Day One of the Adidas/Michigan Invitational. ASU’s record now holds at 9-2 overall in their best start since 1997.
After the match, Head Coach Jason Watson expressed his excitement on the achievement for ASU stating, “The team continues to mature day by day, though we still have a lot of work to do in order to achieve our goals for the season. For now though, we celebrate that we’re 9-2 but also realize that we need to focus on tomorrow with confidence that we can finish this weekend 11-2.”
The match started off strong for ASU as the Sun Devils game out guns blazing in the first set hitting a stellar .375 team attack percentage as Sarah Reaves knocked them down with seven kills as Paige Mittelstaedt and Sonja Markanovich collected two kills and two blocks apiece to take a decisive 25-14 win.
The Sun Devils repeated the feat in the second set, hitting .355 as Marina Mercer tossed the rock for 16 assists for all 16 of ASU’s kills, setting up Sarah Reaves for five and Paige Mittelstaedt for four with ASU taking a 25-19 and 2-0 lead into the break.
In the third the Sun Devils seemed to hit the bricks though as Albany stormed back to shock ASU with a 25-8 win with a team attack percentage at an amazing .750 as the Great Danes blazed past ASU. The Sun Devils regained some composure in the fourth set, but Albany’s offense was still smoldering from the third set as they squeaked out a 25-22 win to even the match at 2-2.
ASU came out in the fifth to decide it though as Margie Giordano took the reigns for three kills and a .429 attack percentage as ASU rallied off a 6-2 scoring rally at one point to put the Great Danes away 15-10.
The Adidas/Michigan Invitational rolls on tomorrow as ASU will gear up to play a doubleheader taking on Western Kentucky at 1:30 p.m. and No. 25 Michigan at 7:30 p.m. ET in Ann Arbor, Mich.
