Men and women XC take second at Dave Murray Meet
Sept. 19, 2008
TUCSON - Both the UA men and women's cross country teams placed second at the Dave Murray Invitational held at Dell Urich Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz.
The men kicked off the action with the 6,000 meter run and Sophomore Victor Zazueta paced the UA men's team. Zazueta finished in a solid third place in a time of 18:55.81 and was first among point-scoring athletes.
Redshirt freshman and former high school Abdi Hassan opened up his collegiate career with a sixth place finish in 19:11.26. Keeping up with the trend of lower classmen leading the team was sophomore Mohamud Ige who came in as the third UA athlete to cross the line and finished 13th overall in 19:29.78.
On the women's side, several UA athletes showed strong showings in the 4,000-meter run. Like most of last year, senior Irine Lagat led the way for the women on her way to a third place finish in 13:46.42.
Maggie Callahan came in sixth place (14:06.35) and second among UA athletes. She was followed by freshman Hannah Moen, who was following up her strong performance at the George Kyte Invitational in Flagstaff two weeks ago, finished eighth (14:16.65).
Despite the strong finishes from the team's youth, Arizona State still came away with the title on both sides. The meet did, nevertheless, provide the coaches with a good look at the potential their younger athletes could have.
UA head coach Fred Harvey also used this rare home meet to run some of his sprinters from the track and field season and give them some endurance training.
The Wildcats will be back in action in two weekends at the Notre Dame Invitational in Indiana.
