Sept. 19, 2008
WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Freshman outside hitter Alex Jupiter (Hermosa Beach/Redondo Union HS) had a match-high 17 kills Friday as the No. 5 USC Women of Troy swept the host Army Cadets, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-14), to win the 2008 West Point Challenge. Jupiter hit .438 in the ESPNU-televised match (17-3-32) with one assists, six digs and three blocks.
Junior outside hitter Jessica Gysin (Los Gatos/St. Francis HS) added 10 kills for USC (7-2), hitting .474 (10-1-19) with an assist, six digs and one solo block. Gysin was named tournament most valuable player after posting 23 kills for a .378 hitting clip in three matches with 15 digs.
'We showed with a young squad that we can travel and still win,' said USC head coach Mick Haley. 'We didn't have an ideal traveling situation this weekend, but we found a way to handle being out of our comfort zone. I thought Alex was electric tonight.'
The Women of Troy hit a season-high .442 against the Cadets, including a .625 clip in set three (15-0-24).
Sophomore outside hitter Kimmee Roleder (Pasadena/Pasadena HS) did not commit a hitting error on 10 swings (6-0-10) for a .600 performance while sophomore middle blocker Zoe Garrett (Laguna Beach/Laguna Beach HS) was errorless, hitting .417 (5-0-12) and recording three service aces.
After USC got out to an 8-3 lead, Army took its first timeout. The Trojans came out and unfurled a 9-3 run as junior All-America setter Taylor Carico capped it with a service ace. The Cadets scored four straight to cut the deficit to seven at 21-14 before USC held on for the first set win.
Carico's '310' kill gave USC the 9-5 lead in the set two. Jupiter put down three kills as USC kept the lead at four when the media timeout came with the Trojans up, 15-11. Zoe Garrett's kill on the overpass started a run of six straight points for the Trojans, taking command at 21-12. Geena Urango finished the game off with a service ace, knocking one off the net to drop in and give USC the 2-0 match lead.
A 6-1 run opened the third set for USC as Carico and Garrett generated the offense for another 6-1 run with USC leading, 13-5. Gysin came out of the break with back-to-back kills as the Trojans later put the match away with another streak of five straight points.
USC opens Pac-10 Conference play at home on Friday (Sept. 25) against UCLA at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
