Women's Tennis Opens Season at Georgia Tech Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. - Women’s Tennis kicked off their 2008-2009 season Friday in Atlanta at the Georgia Tech Invitational among a strong field of players including the reigning NCAA Champion, Georgia Tech’s Amanda McDowell.
It was a tough day for the Sun Devils as they took on a young Georgia Tech team, who finished last season ranked sixth overall in the NCAA. Although ultimately defeated, Sophomore Micaela Hein put up an impressive effort against Georgia Tech’s Noelle Hickey, taking the match to three sets and winning the first 5-7 before Hickey rallied back to take the 6-3, 7-5.
Sophomore Kelcy McKenna put up a challenge for the NCAA champion, but ultimately fell to the third ranked McDowell. The bright spot of the day saw Sophomore Ashlee Brown defeat Georgia Tech’s Sasha Krupina in a two-set assault 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles action, the Devils fought hard but struggled against Georgia. Kelcy McKenna and Micaela Hein battled it out against the 23rd ranked Gullickson/Hyndman duo, but ultimately fell 8-6. Laila Abdala and newcomer, Ali Van Horne hung tough against Georgia’s Dancevic and Gilchrist, but the Bulldogs overpowered them 8-5.

Ellis/Ueshima (UGA) def. Brown/Simmons (ASU) 8-6.
Play continues tomorrow with doubles action starting at 9:30 when Arizona State will take on Princeton. It will continue with singles at 1:30 when the Devils take on the Georgia Bulldogs.
