ASU Women's Soccer Plays Michigan to 1-1 Tie
Sept. 21, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's soccer team and Michigan played to a 1-1 tie on Sunday at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. While it was their second tie in as many weeks, the Sun Devils remained unbeaten in their last five games (3-0-2) and are now 4-2-3 on the season. Michigan is now 3-4-2.
Statistically speaking, the Sun Devils dominated, concluding the match with big advantages in shots (20-5) and corner kicks (11-2).
The Wolverines only had only one shot in regulation, but they took full advantage of it when sophomore Amanda Bowery got the ball passed Sun Devil goalkeeper Briana Silvestri to take a 1-0 lead in the game's 36th minute.
Time and again the Wolverines continually found a way to stymie the Sun Devils' attack. However ASU's persistence paid off when sophomore Alexandra Elston found the back of the net in the 86th minute to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was set up by senior Kylla Sjoman (corner kick) and sophomore Jill Shoquist (headed Sjoman's kick to Elston).
Each team had opportunities to win in the extra 20 minutes, however strong play by the goalkeepers on both sides - Silvestri for ASU and Madison Gates for Michigan - kept the game tied.
The Sun Devils continue their seven-game homestand next weekend when they host UCSB (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Long Beach State (Sunday, 1 p.m).
