Bruins and Broncos Play to 0-0 Draw
Sept. 25, 2008
Santa Clara, Calif. - The second-ranked UCLA women's soccer team posted yet another shutout on Thursday evening, playing to a 0-0 draw with Santa Clara in a non-conference showdown at Buck Shaw Stadium. Despite having to settle for their second scoreless draw of the year, the Bruins (7-0-2) were able to add to their consecutive shutout streak, posting their eighth in a row on Thursday.
UCLA, which outshot Santa Clara, 16-14 on the evening, had the better of the play for most of the evening, continually pushing deep into the Broncos' half of the field. The Bruins' best chance to score actually came in just the second minute of play when senior midfielder McCall Zerboni nearly capitalized on a scoring chance just outside the Santa Clara goal. The ball was crossed in from the right side and Zerboni drove a left-footed shot from close range that was saved by Bronco goalkeeper Meagan McCray. The ball rebounded back to Zerboni, who hit another shot that hit off the post and out of bounds.
The Bruins' back line, along with goalkeeper Ashley Thompson, continues to keep opponents out of the Bruin net this year. UCLA has given up just one goal this season (in the season opener against UCSB), outscoring the competition 22-1 this season. Thompson picked up her third shutout of the year on Thursday.
Bruin junior Kara Lang posted a match-high six shots, two of which were on goal.UCLA begins a four-match homestand next Friday, hosting Pepperdine at Drake Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
