Jacobson to Compete in FIFA Futsal World Cup

Sept. 26, 2008

BERKELEY - Former California men's soccer standout Andrew Jacobson is one of 14 members of the U.S. Futsal National team that landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, yesterday, preparing for the FIFA Futsal World Cup, which begins on Sept. 30. U.S. head coach Keith Tozer's team begins Group B action against Paraguay at 8:30 a.m. PT on Sept. 30. Jacobson was named to the team earlier this month by Tozer.

Futsal is a variation of soccer that is played on basketball-sized courts, both indoors and out, with four field players and a goalkeeper on each team.

Jacobson, one of the six midfielders on the roster, has trained with the U.S. futsal team twice before, most recently in July of 2007, when Jacobson was the only college player to train with the team while it prepared for the 2007 Pan American Games.

Capped off by being named the Co-Pac-10 Player of the Year last year, Jacobson had a very successful tenure while playing for Cal head coach Kevin Grimes. In 2007, Jacobson was named an NSCAA first-team All-American, an NSCAA Far West All-Region first-team selection and a Soccer America second-team MVP.

Jacobson currently plays professionally for FC Lorient in France. Following his days in Berkeley, he was originally drafted by DC United in MLS before opting to sign with the French club.
