Arizona opens Pac-10 with sweep of Washington State

Dosty leads team with season-high17 kills

Opening the 2008 Pac-10 season, the Arizona volleyball team (11-1) swept by visiting Washington State 3-0 Friday night at McKale Center.

The Wildcats out hit the Cougars .252 to .189 and recorded nine more kills on their way to a 25-23, 25-20 and 25-19 win.

Redshirt sophomore Whitney Dosty led the team with a season-high 17 kills and hit .351.

“Fortunately Whitney was great tonight,” head coach Dave Rubio said. “She was a big factor for us.”

Arizona struggled out of the gates, falling behind 10-4 in the first set, but recovered to win 25-23 and ran their current win streak to six games.

“We got off to a poor start, but we showed some heart and were able to recover quickly,” said Dosty. “Facing some adversity will hopefully benefit us in the long run.”

Leading the way in digs, was junior libero Alanna Resch with a season-high 19 and sophomore outside hitter Tiffany Owens added 12 kills.

The Wildcats jump right back into Pac-10 play tomorrow night when they host No. 9 Washington at 7:00 p.m. in McKale Center.

“When we know we need to play well, we usually play well,” said Rubio.
