No. 20 Cal Men's Golf in Second Place After Day One in Washington

BREMERTON, Wash. - The California men's golf program, which has posted back-to-back top-three finishes to open its 2008-09 campaign, is currently in second place after the first two rounds of the Husky Invitational on Monday at Gold Mountain Golf Course. Three Golden Bears golfers are in the top five of the event, led by senior Michael Jensen, who is in second place after the opening day.

Host Washington leads the tournament with a 565 (-11). Cal is second after firing rounds of 285-287 to finish at 572 (-4), 13 strokes ahead of third-place San Diego State (585, +9). Oregon (590, +14) and Pacific (594, +18) round out the top five.

The event concludes with the final round on Tuesday morning beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Individually, senior Michael Jensen leads the way for the Golden Bears. Jensen shot an opening round 69 with four birdies and just one bogey, then followed that with a five-birdie 71 in the afternoon round. His overall 140 has in second place overall, one stroke off the lead held by Washington's Chris Killmer.

Eric Mina is also continuing his excellent sophomore season, shooting a 71-72 - 143 (-1) to tie for fifth place with teammate John Murphy (73-70 - 143, -1), the talented transfer from Old Dominion.

Senior Kent Yamane, seeing his first collegiate tournament action since the 2006-07 season after redshirting last year, is tied for 22nd place with a 149 (+5). Sophomore Stephen Hale has a two-round 151 (+7) and is tied for 34th place in the event to round out the Cal lineup.

Junior Evan Derian, playing in the event as an individual, has a 153 (+9) after two rounds.

Cal has played in the Husky Invitational seven times in the last decade with a top finish of fourth place in 2006.
