Sept. 29, 2008

Arizona woman's tennis freshman Sarah Landsman lost to Fresno State's Abigail Olivier 1-6;7-5;1-0(12-10) in the finals of the consolation round on Sunday at the Cal Nike Invitational. She defeated Long Beach State's Hannah Grady 4-6;7-6(5);1-0(11-9) in the semifinals.

In other consolation rounds, junior Ariane Masschelein lost to Fresno State's Bruna Paes 6-3; 6-2, and freshman Natasha Marks defeated Arizona State's Micaela Hein 2-6;7-5;1-0(10-3).

In the doubles consolation finals, Landsman and fellow freshman Natasha Marks lost to Minnesota's Alessandra Ferrazi and Tijana Koprivica 8-2.

Up next for the tennis team is the Riviera All-American Main Draw & Qual in Los Angeles September 30 through October 5th.

'The All-American tournament is a preview of the best competition in the country. There are no easy matches here.' Said head coach Vicky Maes about players Danielle Steinberg and Claire Cox. 'The players invited to participate are the best of the best so Dani and Claire will have to play great tennis from point one. Neither has competed in several months but we really practiced hard and focused.'

Maes says that the keys to win are to come out strong, make serves, return well and then to execute their offense. Steinberg did well in this tournament last year, and because she is healthier this year, she is expected to start off well.
