USC Men Break Ground In Virginia
Oct. 1, 2008
The USC men's tennis team sent a solid group of players out to Virginia last week to kick off the 2008-09 season with competition at the UVa Ranked Plus One Invitational. The action was the first for several new Trojans, who gained some key early experience against ranked opponents in singles and doubles play during the trip to Charlottesville, Va.
Although stormy skies pushed much of play indoors, eight Trojans got in at least four singles matches during the three-day event. Freshmen Mateusz Kecki and Daniel Nguyen both picked up three wins to kick off their Trojan careers with a 3-2 singles record after their first weekend. Freshman Steven Johnson went 2-2 at the event, as did returning Trojans Daniel Gliner, Abdullah Magdas and Jaak Poldma. USC junior Gary Sacks had the strongest outing, following up an early loss with three straight wins in the backdraw. To get to that 3-1 mark on the weekend, Sacks had to get through teammate Magdas, fighting off his fellow Trojan for a 7-5, 6-2 win.
In doubles play, the new pairings of Sacks/Nguyen and Johnson/Poldma both tallied a 2-1 mark over the stretch. Magdas/Kecki went 1-2, and Gliner/McNaughton went 0-3 in doubles competition. Full results from the action in Virginia are below.
