Cossou and Ilcinkas Advance to Second Round at All-American

Oct. 2, 2008

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - No. 7-ranked California women's tennis sophomore Marina Cossou punched her ticket to the round of 16 at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships today with a three-set victory over No. 15-ranked Megan Falcon of LSU. No. 22 senior Claire Ilcinkas also pushed through to the second round with a three-set win over No. 23-ranked Katrina Tsang of North Carolina. Both players will have a chance to secure automatic bids to the ITA National Indoor Championships with wins tomorrow (Oct. 3).

Cossou took her first set, 6-3, but stumbled in the second, falling 6-2. Earning a break in the third, Cossou finished things off with a 6-4 win against a familiar foe in Falcon. The Bears faced LSU in the second round of the NCAA team championships last year, winning in a 4-0 rout. Cossou will move on to face No. 3 Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech, the reigning NCAA singles champion.

Ilcinkas needed to come from behind to win her match, falling 6-3 in the first set to Tsang. She matched the score in the second set, sending Tsang to a third set carrying the momentum. In the third, Ilcinkas was nearly unstoppable, emerging with a 6-1 win. Ilcinkas will move on to face No. 87 Ragini Achraya of William & Mary. Ilcinkas and Achraya faced off in a dual match last season (Mar. 5) with Ilcinkas coming out victorious in a 6-3, 7-5 decision in Berkeley, Calif.

Cossou and Ilcinkas also took part in the doubles qualifier consolation and earned three wins to advance to the final in the consolation bracket. They beat No. 23 Hyndman and Gullickson, 9-7 in the first round; No. 27 Baureggar and Voelker, 8-6 in the quarterfinal; and No. 39 Ciobanu and Rielley, 8-4 in the semifinal. The pair will face the No. 33-ranked duo of Caitlin Whoriskey and Marial Sorbello of Tennessee tomorrow (Oct. 3) in a 9 a.m. match before continuing with their second and possibly third round singles matches.

In other consolation action, No. 65-ranked senior Bojana Bobusic got two wins, one a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Macall Harkins of TCU and the other, a 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 66 Anastasia Revzina of Florida. Bobusic fell in the singles consolation quarterfinal in a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Amanda Granson of Duke.
