Heavey and Stewart Face Top Competition at All-American
Oct. 2, 2008
BERKELEY - California men's tennis senior Eoin Heavey joins junior Kallim Stewart at the 2008 D'Novo ITA Men's All-American Championship this week (Oct. 6-12) in Tulsa, Okla. The week-long tournament will be played on the courts of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Tulsa beginning with a qualifying round, and then followed by the main draw. Play opens on Monday, Oct. 6, with first round singles. A single round of consolation play will be played on Oct. 7 for first-round losers.
Stewart holds the No. 64 ranking in the ITA preseason singles rankings while Heavey was selected to the qualifying field of 128 competitors after being listed as an alternate, holding the No. 121 ranking. The two will also combine to compete in the doubles qualifying tournament as one of 64 teams. Both the first and second round of the doubles qualifier will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 7, with third and qualifying rounds taking place on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
64 singles players will compete in the main draw beginning Thursday, Oct. 9; 48 at-large and wild card selections and 16 from the qualifying tournament. Several of the 48 at-large selections receive automatic entry to the main draw including the returning champion, the ITA National Summer Championships champion, the top two players from each region and returning players from the top 20 of the year-end ITA rankings.
The doubles main draw will consist of 24 at-large (and wild card) selections and eight teams from the qualifying tournament for a field of 32. Both singles and doubles championship matches will be played on Sunday, Oct. 12. Cal has never produced an All-American Championship title winner in either singles or doubles.
Last year, Stewart made the trip to Tulsa alone and was defeated in the first round of the qualifying tournament by a No. 105-ranked Clint Bowles of Florida State, 6-3, 6-2. Stewart fared no better in the qualifier's back-draw consolation as Christoph Mueller of Rice handed him a 6-1, 6-4 loss.
