Rodriguez Blasts Three In 7-0 Win For USC
Oct. 2, 2008
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 5 USC women's soccer team pinned up its seventh consecutive win of the year with a 7-0 victory over Cal State Bakersfield at McAlister Field. Playing in a rare Thursday match, the Women of Troy also saw several rare achievements in the game, highlighted by a three-goal performance from senior Amy Rodriguez. It was the first hat trick of Rodriguez's career at USC and the first by a Trojan since 1997. Sophomore Ashli Sandoval also was in powerful form in the match, tying her first season's goal total with a two-goal effort on the day. Sandoval also added a pair of assists in today's win to stand as USC's leader in points with four goals and seven assists so far this season. The victory pulls the Trojans to 9-1-0 overall, while Cal State Bakersfield moves to 4-8-1.
The Roadrunners managed the first shot of the game when Ryann Hernandez got deep on the Trojans and slotted a looping shot that went over USC goalkeeper Kristin Olsen and was saved in front of the goal line by defender Stacey Strong. From that point, however, the Women of Troy controlled things, amassing 37 shots before Cal State Bakersfield got one last look in the waning minutes of the match. The Trojans wound up out-shooting the Roadrunners 37-2 in the game, with USC goalkeepers Kristin Olsen and Brittany Massro splitting time in goal to share the shutout -- USC's third consecutive shutout win and 16th straight unbeaten game at home.
The Women of Troy got the upper hand in the 17th minute of play on a nice possession by the Trojans. From the left, Megan Ohai centered the ball to Ashley Nick, who pushed a pass up to Brittany Kerridge. Kerridge dropped the ball right back for Amy Rodriguez, who drilled her shot hard to the far post. That goal would stand as the game-winner for the Trojans, lifting Rodriguez's career mark for game-winners up to 10 and ranking her No. 4 all-time at USC.
Later in the half, it was Ashli Sandoval's chance to serve up some heroics. In the 36th minute, Karter Haug sent a pass in for Sandoval, who ran on the pass and drove her shot to the low right post to make it 2-0 USC. Five minutes later, Sandoval would strike again. This one came off a long ball served from defender Janessa Currier. Currier sailed the ball over the Roadrunner defense for Sandoval, who put away the opportunity to carry USC ahead 3-0 in the 41st minute.
Up 3-0 at halftime, the Trojans continued to push on. Having knocked in back-to-back goals during the first half, Sandoval set up for back-to-back assists in the second half. In the 49th minute, Sandoval launched a corner kick from the right side, finding Alyssa Dávila for a nice header and a 4-0 USC advantage. Less than 30 seconds later, the ball was again in the back of the Cal State Bakersfield net. This time, Sandoval delivered a cross from deep right and Nini Loucks was in position in front of the goal for a driving header that made it 5-0.
The rest of the scoring was taken care of by Rodriguez. The speedy senior went on the attack and pulled Roadrunner goalkeeper Mari Constantinou out of the goal. Rodriguez's first shot try was blocked, but she slotted her next shot through to the right side to secure her second goal of the game. She took the tally one better before the close of the game, however. Senior defender Amy Massey sent a pass deep to Rodriguez in the 89th minute. Rodriguez took the pass and charged toward goal, taking the CSUB goalkeeper one-on-one and finishing to the top of the net. In doing so, Rodriguez became one of six Women of Troy to score three goals in a game. Amy Peterson holds the USC record with four scored in 1993, with five Trojans since then getting hat tricks. Megan Orach was the last USC player to notch three goals in a match. She had three goals and two assists in a 6-0 win over Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 19, 1997.
The 7-0 win also matches a program record for the largest margin of victory in program history.
USC home stand continues this weekend with a 1 p.m. match against Cal State Northridge on Sunday (Oct. 5).
