Men's Golf Faces Busy Weekend

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona varsity and junior varsity golf teams will be in action this weekend, as the varsity competes in the Wolf Pack Classic in Reno, Nev., while the JV plays its first match of the season at the inaugural University of Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.

The UA varsity, which finished seventh at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate last week, head north to Reno, Nev., for its second tournament of the season. This tournament features 13 teams and will cover 54 holes. The first 36 holes are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 6, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PST. The 18-hole finale will be on Tuesday, Oct. 7, also with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

Arizona is the defending champion of the tournament, winning the 2007 Wolf Pack Classic by 16 strokes over Iowa. The Wildcats finished with a total of 850 strokes, 14-under par. Arizona's Tyler Neal was the individual medalist, shooting a 6-under 211.

In addition to Arizona, the field includes host Nevada, Air Force, Fresno State, Iowa State, Kansas State, Louisiana-Monroe, New Mexico State, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, Tennessee, UTEP and Wichita State.

The following five players are scheduled to compete for Arizona: Brad Nicholson, Tyler Neal, Tarquin MacManus, Jonathan Khan and Roberto Galletti.

The Arizona junior varsity will also be in action this weekend. They will be playing in the University of Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, Calif., Oct. 4-5. This 7,305 yard, par-72 course Is also host to the PGA's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

The Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, in its first year, will have 19 teams competing: host Wyoming, Arizona, Boise State, Colorado State, Denver, Gonzaga, Idaho, Long Beach State, UMKC, Northern Colorado, Oregon State, Portland, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, UC Santa Barbara, Utah, Utah Valley, Washington State and Weber State.

Arizona will bring five players, including some seeing their fist collegiate action. Competing for Arizona will be Andrew Kelley, Beck Miller, Peter Croonquist, Kenji Hernandez and Philip Bagdade.
