No. 7 Cossou Advances to All-American Championship Semifinal

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - No. 7-ranked California women's tennis sophomore Marina Cossou advanced to the semifinal in the singles main draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships today and qualified for automatic entry to the ITA National Indoor Tennis Championships in Charlottesville, Va., Nov. 6-9. Cossou will take on the winner of the other quarterfinal between No. 9 Fani Chifchieva (Auburn) and No. 2 Ani Mijacika (Clemson) in a 10 a.m. match Saturday, Oct. 4.

Cossou started the day with a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 87 Ragini Achraya of William & Mary in the round of 16 and then took out No. 11-ranked Georgia Rose of Northwestern in two sets, 7-6, 6-4. Cossou won the tiebreaker in the first set by holding Rose to just two points.

No. 22-ranked senior Claire Ilcinkas fell in the round of 16 to defending NCAA singles champion No. 3 Amanda McDowell in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.

Earlier in the day, as the No. 22-ranked doubles team, Cossou and Ilcinkas teamed up to defeat No. 33-ranked Caitlin Whoriskey and Marial Sorbello of Tennessee in the doubles qualifying consolation final to give the duo four wins together on the weekend.
