No. 7 Cossou's All-American Championship Run Ends in Semifinal
Oct. 4, 2008
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - No. 7-ranked California women's tennis sophomore Marina Cossou had her run at the All-American Championship singles title cut short today as she fell in three sets to No. 9 Fani Chifchieva of Auburn in the semifinal of the Riviera/ITA Women's Tennis All-American Championship in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Cossou was able to capture three wins over ranked opponents during the weekend, each of which will go towards her first regular season ranking in January, 2009.
'I think this was a great tournament for Marina,' said head coach Amanda Augustus, 'She didn't play a lot of matches over the summer so this was the perfect test to see where she's at. It's always great to have Cal playing in the final rounds at this prestigious tournament. Of course, we were hoping for a more positive outcome but she is only a sophomore and I believe this will serve as great motivation to work even harder in order to get back to this level. She'll be back this time next year with a vengeance.'
Cossou and Chifchieva each opened the match strong and aggressive, breaking serve back and forth. With the set score at 5-4 in favor of Chifchieva, the Auburn junior from Plovdiv, Bulgaria got tentative with her attack. Even so, Cossou was unable to capitalize, committing enough errors to surrender the first set, 6-4.
Down 4-2 in the second set, Cossou changed up her style of play and became much more reactionary than aggressively attacking. She was able to fight back to a four-all tie before pulling out a long ninth game. Cossou took advantage of Chifchieva errors to claim the second set, 6-4.
A sharp Chifchieva didn't allow Cossou to sustain her momentum in the third set as she got out to a 3-0 lead over the Cal sophomore. Cossou fought back and got the score to 3-1 but Chifchieva came right back to earn a 4-1 advantage. Cossou won the next two games to come within one at 4-3 but too many close calls down the stretch eventually put Cossou's match-life in jeopardy. Chifchieva made the most of the situation and claimed the eighth and ninth games to win the set and match, advancing to tomorrow's (Oct. 5) singles championship.
Next up for Cal women's tennis is the St. Mary's Invitational in Moraga, Calif., Oct. 10-12.
