Golden Bears Win Both Doubles Draws at Bulldog Classic
Oct. 5, 2008
FRESNO, Calif. - The California men's tennis team completed play today at the 15th annual Fresno State Bulldog Classic on the courts of the Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif. The Golden Bears had not just one, but two doubles teams capture the titles in their individual draws. In the A Draw, the top-seeded tandem of sophomore Pedro Zerbini and senior Geoff Chizever put an 8-5 win on Matthews and Stege of UC Irvine in the semifinal round before taking out the third-seeded team of Boutillier and DeVilliers of host, Fresno State in an 8-4 decision.
In the B Draw doubles bracket, Cal's team of sophomores Andy Chirita and Zach Gilbert got an 8-4 win in the semifinal against Washington's Bator and Rosinski; then came out and took an 8-5 win against Henderson and Vaidyanthan of UC Irvine.
After getting three wins this week, Zerbini made an appearance in the final match of the A Draw singles bracket but was not able to close out DeVilliers after winning the first set, 6-2 and losing the second, 6-3. The two went to a tiebreaker in the third set, but DeVilliers put a 7-3 score in the books to claim the Bulldog Classic singles crown.
The Bears are next in action when they host the ITA West-North Regional Championship at Hellman Tennis Complex on Oct. 17-21. Senior No. 121 Eoin Heavey and junior No. 64 Kallim Stewart are in Tulsa, Okla. this week (Oct. 6-12) for the qualifying tournament of the ITA All-American Championships. Both are in the singles field individually as well as in the doubles field as a team.
