Husky Crew Takes Second At Head Of The Oklahoma

Oct. 5, 2008

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Washington men's crew kicked off its fall season with a strong performance at the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta this weekend. The Huskies sent one boat, which finished second in both the head race and the night sprint.

The men's eight, coxed by Michelle Darby, completed the 4,000-meter (2.5-mile) twisting course through downtown Oklahoma City with a time of 12:44.87. The race featured dual starts, with crews jockeying for position as they navigated a series of turns and bridges. The Huskies' time put them in second overall in the event, four seconds behind the first-place Harvard Crimson eight.

Washington's second-place finish in the head race qualified the crew for a 500-meter super sprint held Saturday night under four stadium light towers. The Huskies raced from the fifth lane and lined up against Harvard in lane six, Wichita State in four, Nebraska in three, Oklahoma State in two and Wichita State in lane one. The Dawgs pulled across the line in 1:23.26, less than a half second behind the Crimson, who managed a 1:22.80 finish.

The Husky crew will be back in action Oct. 18-19 at the Head of the Charles in Cambridge, Mass. For the complete schedule and results, visit
