Zerbini Advances to Bulldog Classic Singles Final

FRESNO, Calif. - California men's tennis sophomore Pedro Zerbini cashed in on a 6-1, 6-4 semifinal victory over Washington's Derek Drabble to claim a spot in the A Draw singles final at the 15th annual Fresno State Bulldog Classic. The Golden Bears conclude the three-day tournament at the Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif. Sunday, Oct. 5 with Zerbini in the final and two doubles teams in semifinal matches in their individual draws. The top-seeded Zerbini draws fourth-seeded Rikus Devilliers of Fresno State in a 10 a.m. match. Devilliers took out sophomore Jonathan Dahan in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

Dahan defeated San Francisco's Thong Tu in the quarterfinal, 6-3, 6-2 before he was eliminated by Devilliers. In other quarterfinal matches, freshman Thai Tu took a 6-3, 6-1 victory over eighth-seeded Starke Moritz of Pacific before drawing Zerbini in his semifinal match. Zerbini showed his fellow teammate no mercy, coming through with a 6-3, 6-3 win to earn his spot in the final.

In the B Draw consolation bracket, freshman Sky Lovill couldn't get past Washington's Brad Bator, falling 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 in three sets. Fellow frosh Evan Rose, set to take on Oregon's Sho Higuchi, withdrew from his match prior to its start due to injury. After claiming the first set in the C Draw quarterfinal, sophomore Zach Gilbert fell in a three-setter to UC Santa Barbara's second-seeded Devin Nerenberg 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

In doubles play, top-seeded duo, senior Geoff Chizever and Zerbini took a 9-8 quarterfinal victory over Foy and Sonnesson of Cal Poly and will face UC Irvine's Matthews and Stege in the semifinal round. Matthews and Stege defeated Dahan and Tu, 8-5, in another quarterfinal match to set up their second consecutive meeting with a Cal team. In the B Draw doubles quarterfinal, sophomores Andy Chirita and Gilbert got an 8-5 win over Stith and Tateishi of Washington to set up a meeting with Bator and Rosinski, also of Washington in a semifinal match. Both doubles semifinal matches take place at 8 a.m. tomorrow (Oct. 5) with finals at noon.
