No. 10 Washington Snaps No. 11 USC's Home Win Streak At 32

Oct. 11, 2008

LOS ANGELES -- Becky Perry had 24 kills and 13 digs Saturday as the No. 10 Washington Huskies beat the No. 11 USC Women of Troy, 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 15-9), in a Pac-10 match at the Galen Center. The Huskies handed the Women of Troy their first home loss in nearly two years, snapping the school-record win streak at 32 matches.

Washington (13-3, 4-2) pulled off the rare sweep of the LA schools after another five-set win last night at UCLA. USC fell to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in Pac-10 play.

Alex Jupiter had a team-high 19 kills with 10 digs while redshirt freshman Lauren Williams had a season-high 16 kills and hit .462 (16-4-26) for the Trojans. Jessica Gysin and Kimmee Roleder had 16 and 11 kills, respectively, as a mistake-prone USC squad committed 31 attack errors and 10 service errors on the night.

Kindra Carlson had 12 kills and eight block assists for the Huskies while Airial Salvo had 10 kills and 15 digs. Jessica Swarbrick posted eight kills in a .400 night (8-2-15) for Washington.

In the battle of the setters, USC's Taylor Carico had 59 assists, seven kills, nine digs and three block assists while UW's Jenna Hagglund had 57 assists, 11 digs, one kill and one block assist.

Both teams worked to a 11-10 score for Washington in set one before Williams started four straight points for USC and the 14-11 lead. After UW called the timeout, the Huskies answered with four straight of their own. Roleder and Salvo later exchanged kills for an 18-18 tie. A Husky error and Gysin kill made it 20-18 for USC. Both teams battled again, trading points to a 23-22 Trojan advantage before Jupiter's kill keyed the way for the set one win.

Washington took control of set two, utilizing its blocking game to jump out to the 11-4 lead. Salvo added two kills and Carlson and Bianca Rowland stuffed another USC attempt for the 16-9 advantage. Swarbrick hammered another kill as UW led, 22-16. Jupiter figured in three of four kills as part of a 4-1 run late, but the Trojans fell to the Huskies as Perry tied the match.

Carlson and Swarbrick's stuff started a streak of six for the Huskies in set three, pushing to the 11-7 lead. Williams went back-to-back to complete a 7-1 run lead for the Trojans to go up 14-12. Three straight UW points provided the momentum as the score stayed close towards a 21-19 lead. A USC block and Gysin kill made it 21-21 with both teams going back-and-forth again. At 23-23, Perry caught Roleder off guard with a kill and Carlson's kill made it a 2-1 Washington lead.

The Women of Troy forged a 9-4 lead in the fourth game, but saw the Huskies rally to tie it at 14-14. With the score at 19-19, it was a Trojan block party as three straight blocks comprised the foundation for five straight points. Washington would stave off set point with four straight points as the Huskies used three straight blocks of their own before Williams and Roleder stuffed Perry to force the deciding set.

Perry's kill snapped a 5-5 tie as the Huskies would not look back. Jill Collymore's ace and a Swarbrick kill pushed the edge to 10-6. Gysin went back-to-back terminations for the Trojans, but the Huskies thwarted a comeback with a 5-1 run to close the victory. Washington saved its best for last, hitting .409 in set five (10-1-22).

USC travels to Arizona State next Friday (Oct. 17) for a 7 p.m. match and Arizona on Sunday (Oct. 19) at 1 p.m.
