Cal Returns to Stockton for Pacific Invitational

The California men's swimming team returns to Stockton, Calif., this week for the Pacific Invitational. The 1-0 Golden Bears, who won at Pacific, 135-113, on Oct. 11 to open the 2008-09 season, will only compete on the first day (Oct. 17) of the Tigers' two-day meet this week. There will be no diving at the Pacific Invitational.

Bears Defeat Pacific, 135-113, to Open Season
Cal defeated Pacific, 135-113, in an Oct. 11 dual meet at the Tigers' Chris Kjeldsen Pool. The Bears, under the direction of second-year head coach David Durden, won nine of 14 events against the Tigers.

Cal won eight individual events, with sophomore Graeme Moore winning the 50- and the 200-yard freestyles in times of 20.67 and 1:44.26, respectively. Moore and Cal also claimed the first relay of the day - the 200-yard medley relay - in a time of 1:31.13. Moore led off the relay and was followed by sophomore and 2008 Olympian Damir Dugonjic, junior Matt Scanlan and senior Bennett Clark, a transfer from Missouri.

The Bears' other individual winners were freshman Isaac Howell with a time of 9:43.84 in the 1000 freestyle, senior Ian Lentz in the 100 backstroke (52.75), Dugonjic in the 100 breaststroke (56.44), freshman Miller Douglas in the 200 fly (1:54.66), sophomore Nick Cordes in the 100 free (46.90) and Scanlan in the 200 back (1:54.59).

Current Bears in Beijing
Nathan Adrian, now a sophomore, was part of a strong Cal contingent that competed in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing this past summer. Adrian won a gold medal as part of the record-setting U.S. 4x100-meter freestyle relay. The Bremerton, Wash., product led off the preliminary race for the United States, recording a split of 48.82 as part of a then-world record time of 3:12.23. He watched as the U.S. team won the final in a new world-record time of 3:08.24.

Sophomore Martti Aljand, swimming for Estonia, was 46th (2:16.52) in the 200-meter breaststroke, sophomore Guy Barnea (Israel) was 16th (54.93) in the 100 backstroke, sophomore Damir Dugonjic (Slovenia) was 16th (1:00.92) in the 100 breaststroke and freshman Martin Liivamagi (Estonia) was 34th (2:03.56) in the 200 individual medley.

Cal is off until the Bears host Pac-10 opponent Washington on Oct. 30 at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley.
