Oct. 16, 2008

The men's and women's cross country teams will compete Saturday at the Pre-NCAA Invitational in Terre Haute, IN for what will be the biggest test of the season before heading into Pac-10s. The meet is held on the same cross country course as the National Championships, and will give the teams a good look at where they stand against nationally-ranked programs.

The men's White Race will begin at 9:50 am PST and will feature 11 nationally ranked programs, including the No. 23 Bruins. Joining UCLA as ranked teams competing this weekend are No. 3 Colorado, No. 7 Iona, No. 10. Stanford, No. 11 Iowa State, No. 12 Virginia, No. 16 Auburn, No. 18 BYU, No. 19. Tulsa, No. 21 Texas and No. 30 Michigan State.

The women's team will race in the White Race at 8:35 am PST and features 10 teams ranked in the top-30 in this week's national poll. Ranked teams competing this weekend are No. 3 Florida State, No. 5 Princeton, No. 8 Arizona State, No. 11 Michigan, No. 12 Stonybrook, No. 14 Baylor, No. 17 Illinois, No. 19 Georgetown, No. 22 Northern Arizona and No. 30 Syracuse. In all, there are 42 teams competing in the White Race.

The men's team entered the national rankings last week at No. 23, and maintained that position into this week. Regionally, the men rank fourth, while the women are 13th.

Two weeks ago, the men put together one of their finest team performances in recent memory as they placed fourth at the Bill Dellinger Invite with just a 17-second spread between the first and fifth-place runner. The men have also captured team crowns at the Big Wave Classic and the UC Irvine Invitational.

The women's team has shown great improvement over last season and posted a team win at the Big Wave Classic. They opened up the year with a second-place showing at the UC Irvine Invite and were fifth overall at the Stanford Invite last month.
