Stanford Heads Across The Bay To California For ITA Regional Championships

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford men's tennis team will return to action on the court tomorrow, taking part in the 2008 ITA Regional Championships across the Bay Area at California. The Cardinal is scheduled to have eight players competing in singles action and five doubles teams go up against the best in the West.
Two facilities, the Hellman Varsity Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Facility will be utilized in the tournament, and fans wishing to attend the matches should note where the match they want to watch will take place. The Hellman Varsity courts are located on campus adjacent to the track and the baseball field, while the Channing courts are located about two blocks from the end of the track tunnel, and are situated above a parking garage.
Friday, the first day in the five-day competition, will be very busy, as all eight Stanford men will begin singles play. Freshman Jamie Hutter and sophomore Ted Kelly will start things off at 8 a.m. at the Hellman Varsity courts, squaring off against Jeff Emmerson (Saint Mary's) and Kiryl Harbatsiuk (Sacramento State ), respectively.
Senior Blake Muller, one of several player to receive the 17th seed, will be next up for the Cardinal, going at 9:30 a.m. against Brad Bator (Washington) on the Channing courts, followed by sophomore Greg Hirshman (17) against Marko Starcevic (Sacramento State) at 10:45 a.m. (also on the Channing courts) and senior Jeff Zeller versus Tyler Campbell (Gonzaga) at 11:15 a.m at Hellman.
Three players, fourth-ranked sophomore Alex Clayton, freshman Bradley Klahn, and No. 66 Wire, received byes into the second round. Top-seeded Clayton will face the winner of Nikoloz Kurdadze (Portland)-Evan Rose (California) at 12:15 p.m. at Hellman. Sophomore No. 66 Richard Wire, the fifth seed, will await a victor in the Bryan Thorp (Portland)-Chase Oliphant (Pacific) match and will play at 2:15 p.m. at Channing. Klahn will match up against the winner of Michael Reiser (UC Davis)-Sho Higuchi (Oregon) at 12:45, also at Channing.
Doubles begin Saturday and the draws for that bracket will be set late Thursday. Stanford is set to have five doubles teams competing, but the pairings are subject to change between now and the beginning of competition. The pairs are as follows: senior Matt Bruch/freshman RyanThacher, Clayton/Klahn, Muller/Wire, Kelly/Hirshman, and Zeller/Hutter,
In the past ten years, Stanford has had much success at the tournament. Six Cardinal players have won the singles championship and seven teams have captured the doubles crown, including a sweep last year by the team as Wire won singles and the duo of Kelly and Muller took home the doubles crown.
